The Gist

“Opel is making its electric compact car more accessible by introducing the new 'Start' trim, lowering the entry price to under €37,000.”

A Strategic Shift in Pricing

As the electric vehicle market continues to evolve, Opel is adjusting its strategy to attract cost-conscious buyers. The Rüsselsheim-based automaker has officially launched the 'Astra Start' equipment variant, a new entry-level trim designed to reduce the barrier to entry for its popular compact lineup. For the Astra Electric, this shift results in a price reduction of €1,900, bringing the starting price down to €36,490.

This initiative is not limited to the electric model alone; Opel is rolling out the 'Start' trim across its broader portfolio, including the Frontera and Combo models. According to Patrick Dinger, CEO of Opel Deutschland, the goal is to provide a more attractive deal for customers while maintaining the brand's reputation for German-engineered quality. By streamlining equipment levels, Opel aims to compete more aggressively in the crowded compact segment.

Understanding the Trade-offs

While the lower price point is certainly a win for affordability, it does come with a few notable trade-offs in standard equipment. The most significant omission for the Astra Electric in this new trim is the heat pump, which was previously a standard feature. Additionally, prospective buyers opting for the 'Start' model will forgo the 180-degree rear-view camera and the convenience of a keyless entry and start system.

Despite these changes, Opel has ensured that the core driving experience remains intact. The Astra Start is still powered by the familiar 115 kW electric drivetrain paired with a 55 kWh battery. Charging capabilities remain consistent with higher trims, supporting 11 kW AC charging and up to 100 kW DC fast charging, ensuring that daily usability remains high for the average commuter.

Technical Specifications and Inclusions

  • Drivetrain: 115 kW electric motor
  • Battery Capacity: 55 kWh
  • Charging: 11 kW AC / 100 kW DC
  • Standard Tech: Dual-cockpit displays for instrumentation and infotainment
  • Comfort Features: Six-way adjustable seats, automatic climate control, and front/rear parking sensors
  • Optional Add-ons: 'Comfort Package Start' available for €500 (includes heat-insulating glazing, auto-dimming mirror, and center armrest)

For those who desire a slightly higher level of equipment, the 'Edition' trim remains available at a starting price of €38,490. Furthermore, Opel has introduced a new metallic blue paint option across the range, allowing buyers to customize their vehicle’s aesthetic. By balancing essential technology with an accessible price point, the Astra Start aims to prove that electric mobility can be both practical and budget-friendly for a wider demographic of drivers.
