The Holy Grail of EV Batteries is Getting Closer
The race for the ultimate electric vehicle power source just saw a major breakthrough from China. Ganfeng Lithium, a global leader in lithium compounds, has announced it's entered small-scale production of what it claims are the world’s first 10 Ah solid-state batteries.
These cutting-edge batteries boast an impressive energy density of 500 Wh/kg, utilizing advanced lithium metal anodes. For EV drivers, this isn't just a number; it translates directly to lighter battery packs, significantly longer driving ranges, and potentially much faster charging times. Ganfeng isn't new to this game, already supplying key materials to automotive giants like Tesla, Volkswagen, and Hyundai, making their solid-state advancements particularly impactful.
Beyond raw power, safety is a key focus. Ganfeng's innovative "zero-strain" lithium alloy anode and sulfur cathode design promise enhanced thermal stability and durability, even passing extreme nail penetration and heating tests up to 250°C. While mass adoption is still a few years away, with many automakers targeting 2027-2028 for small-scale integration, these developments signal that the long-awaited "holy grail" of EV battery technology is steadily moving from labs to production lines.
