The Dawn of the Electric Bentley
The automotive landscape has shifted as Bentley unveils the Torcal, its first-ever all-electric vehicle. Joining the marque’s storied lineup of the Bentayga, Continental GT, and Flying Spur, the Torcal represents a pivotal transition for the British manufacturer. While the move to battery-electric propulsion is a significant departure from its combustion-engine roots, Bentley has ensured the vehicle retains its signature character. This includes a unique synthetic powertrain sound specifically tuned to mimic the rhythmic beat of a classic 6¾-litre V8, bridging the gap for traditionalists moving into the electric age.
Built upon the Volkswagen Group’s sophisticated PPE platform, the Torcal leverages high-voltage 800-volt architecture, a technology proven in other high-performance electric models within the group. The vehicle prioritizes the hallmarks of a true Bentley: superior ride quality, bespoke material craftsmanship, and an aura of exclusivity that defines the brand's position in the ultra-luxury market.
Powertrain and Performance
The Torcal launches with two distinct performance configurations, both utilizing an all-wheel-drive setup powered by two permanent-magnet synchronous motors. These motors are oil-filled and designed for longevity, featuring dry sump systems. The base model offers a robust 604 kW and 1,194 Nm of torque, while the high-performance 'S' variant pushes output to 653 kW and a massive 1,350 Nm of torque. Acceleration is blistering for an SUV of this stature, with the Torcal S capable of hitting 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds.
Efficiency and charging speed are equally impressive. The vehicle houses a 113 kWh battery pack consisting of 192 lithium-ion pouch cells. With a charging capacity of up to 400 kW, owners can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in just 16 minutes at a compatible DC fast-charging station. To ensure driver confidence, Bentley is providing a generous ten-year or 100,000-mile warranty on the battery system.
Refined Dynamics and Design
Engineering excellence extends to the vehicle's handling, where Bentley has implemented its first-ever fully active suspension system featuring adaptive dual-valve dampers. This setup, paired with electronic all-wheel steering, allows each wheel to be adjusted independently in real-time, drastically reducing body roll and maintaining composure on uneven surfaces. The vehicle also offers optional carbon-silicon carbide ceramic brakes for increased stopping power.
Aesthetically, the Torcal is unmistakably Bentley. It maintains the long, muscular hood and iconic grille design associated with the brand, while introducing a cleaner, more minimalist rear profile. Inside, the cabin is a masterclass in luxury, blending traditional materials like premium leather, wool, and aluminum with modern amenities. Physical controls remain on the center console and steering wheel, appealing to those who prefer tactile feedback. Innovations like the panoramic roof with integrated ambient lighting and radar-controlled doors further cement the Torcal as a technologically forward-thinking vehicle that refuses to compromise on elegance.
