The study focused on a cohort of 23 healthy, moderately trained men. Participants were asked to perform leg extensions after a ten-hour fast, a state that usually lowers physical motivation. By introducing controlled scent samples of dark chocolate (90% cocoa), milk chocolate (60% cocoa), and an odorless water control, the team discovered that these olfactory stimuli directly impacted how hard the athletes felt they were working, ultimately allowing them to push through more repetitions than they could with a neutral scent.

Participants consistently rated the smell of milk chocolate as more pleasant, suggesting it functions as a hedonic reward cue. Rather than suppressing hunger signals, the sweet scent creates a highly positive, stimulating sensory environment that lowers the psychological barrier to exercise, making the effort feel less taxing on the mind.
