Walmart is significantly accelerating its footprint in the electric vehicle infrastructure sector. During the second quarter, the retail giant deployed more DC fast chargers than major industry names including Electrify America, EVgo, and the newly formed Ionna joint venture.
A Retail Giant Becomes a Charging Powerhouse
This surge in deployment positions Walmart as the second-most active installer of fast-charging plugs in the United States, trailing only Tesla. The expansion leverages Walmart's massive retail footprint, providing convenient charging options for drivers in high-traffic areas across the country.
The rapid rollout highlights a shift in the EV landscape, where traditional retail entities are utilizing their existing property assets to compete directly with specialized charging networks. By integrating high-speed charging into its locations, Walmart aims to capture the growing market of EV owners who seek to combine shopping trips with vehicle recharging.
