Revolutionizing Heavy-Duty Logistics
In a significant milestone for European logistics, Voltix—a subsidiary of Vinci Concessions—has officially inaugurated its debut high-power charging hub for electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). Located in Vierzon, France, the station stands as the most powerful of its kind in the country, signaling a critical leap forward in supporting the transition to zero-emission road freight. The facility is strategically positioned at the crossroads of major transit arteries, including the A20 and A71 motorways, ensuring it serves as a vital nexus for commercial transport moving between Paris, Toulouse, and beyond.
The technical capabilities of the Vierzon site are designed to meet the rigorous demands of modern haulage. Each of the four initial charging points delivers up to 1.5 megawatts of power. This massive energy throughput allows heavy electric trucks to top up their batteries in just 30 to 45 minutes, perfectly coinciding with the mandatory legal driving breaks required of truck operators every four and a half hours. By integrating both Combined Charging System (CCS) and the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) connectors, the site ensures compatibility with both current e-truck hardware and the next generation of high-capacity vehicles.
Expanding the Network Infrastructure
The Vierzon station is not a standalone experiment but the inaugural pilot for an ambitious pan-European infrastructure rollout. Backed by a €90 million investment consortium involving Vinci Concessions, Épopée Gestion, and ADEME Investissement, Voltix has set its sights on scaling this charging network rapidly. The company is currently executing a roadmap that aims to establish 50 dedicated charging sites across Europe by 2028, with initial focus concentrated on France, followed by deliberate expansions into Germany and Spain.
Why it Matters
- Decarbonization at Scale: With 89% of French land freight currently moving by road, this project directly addresses the 7.4% of national greenhouse gas emissions attributed to the sector.
- Strategic Connectivity: The site is part of the broader DRIVE-FR project, bolstered by European CEF-AFIF funding, which targets the strengthening of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
- Industry Alignment: The opening featured demonstrations from major industry players like Volvo Trucks, Scania, Daimler Truck, Renault Trucks, and MAN, showcasing the unified movement toward MCS-compatible logistics.
A Vision for Long-Haul Electrification
As Nicolas Notebaert, Director General of Concessions at Vinci, aptly noted, an electric truck without a robust, high-speed charging network is merely a promise. By deploying 1.5 MW technology today, Voltix is providing the tangible backbone required for fleet operators to confidently shift away from diesel reliance. The success of this site, combined with the company’s ongoing participation in German federal infrastructure projects, cements Voltix as a primary architect in the effort to turn long-distance electric commercial transport from a theoretical ambition into a daily operational reality.
