The Arrival of the Urbino 40 Electric
After establishing a dominant presence in Europe with over 30,000 vehicles delivered across 34 countries, Solaris has officially broken into the North American market. The company’s grand entrance took place at the APTA TRANSform & EXPO in Chicago, where it debuted the Urbino 40 electric. This 12.4-meter (roughly 40-foot) transit bus is the first in a series of vehicles engineered specifically for the unique regulatory and operational environment of North American cities.
The expansion is a strategic masterstroke led by CEO Javier Iriarte. By leveraging the existing sales, logistics, and manufacturing infrastructure of its parent company, CAF—which has served the American rail industry for decades—Solaris is positioning itself as a reliable partner for transit agencies. This synergy is designed to bridge the gap between European design excellence and the specific requirements of North American infrastructure, including a promise of local manufacturing to support transit sustainability goals.
Urbino 40 Electric: Designed for the American Commute
The Urbino 40 is a two-axle, 12.44-meter transit bus designed to balance high-capacity passenger needs with the agility required for urban environments. It offers two powertrain options—230 kW or 300 kW—providing operators with the flexibility to match vehicle performance to local terrain and duty cycles. The bus houses a robust 528 kWh battery pack mounted on the roof, prioritizing interior cabin space and safety while keeping weight distribution optimized. Safety remains a cornerstone of the platform, featuring an ergonomic, shielded cockpit for drivers and optional high-tech digital mirror systems that replace standard side-view mirrors for improved visibility and reduced drag.
Inside, the bus is configured for efficiency and passenger comfort. It boasts a maximum seating capacity of 41, with an overall passenger limit of 65 when accounting for standing room. The wide-aisle design and barrier-free zones ensure accessibility compliance, a critical requirement for US transit authorities. Furthermore, the bus is equipped with a sophisticated thermal management system and advanced HVAC, ensuring it can handle the temperature extremes found throughout North America while maintaining optimal battery health.
Urbino 60 Electric: The High-Capacity Articulated Heavyweight
For high-volume routes requiring greater throughput, Solaris has also detailed the Urbino 60 electric. This three-axle articulated variant extends to 18.59 meters, designed to accommodate significant passenger loads. It is powered by a dual-motor setup, delivering a total of 460 kW (2 x 230 kW), ensuring the extra mass of the articulated frame is managed with ease. The increased footprint allows for a massive 704 kWh battery, providing the endurance necessary for longer shifts on high-traffic lines.
With a maximum capacity of 123 passengers, including 50 seated, the Urbino 60 acts as a versatile workhorse for major metropolitan transit hubs. Like its shorter sibling, the Urbino 60 features a low-floor design and the same suite of advanced driver assistance systems, proving that Solaris is not merely exporting European products but is providing a comprehensive, specialized platform for the North American heavy-duty transit market.
Why It Matters
- Strategic Expansion: Solaris is utilizing CAF’s established US infrastructure, significantly lowering the barrier to entry for a new manufacturer.
- Safety and Tech: The inclusion of digital mirrors and advanced monitoring systems highlights a shift toward high-tech, data-driven bus operation.
- Market Readiness: With confirmed orders already in place from agencies in Seattle, San Francisco, and Vancouver, Solaris has moved past the concept phase into active, real-world deployment.
