Evolution of the PPE Platform
Porsche has officially cemented its commitment to the electric era with the expansion of its Cayenne lineup. Building upon the success of the Macan, the new Cayenne S Coupé leverages a highly evolved version of the Premium Platform Electric (PPE). While it shares its core DNA with smaller stablemates, the engineering team has implemented significant upgrades to handle the demands of a larger SUV, including a more integrated battery structure and a sophisticated rear-axle motor design that separates the S and Turbo models from the entry-level variant.
The drivetrain features permanently excited synchronous machines on both axles. The rear-axle motor in the S variant is particularly notable for its specialized oil-direct-cooling system. By circulating electrically non-conductive oil directly through the copper windings, Porsche has achieved a superior thermal management system that maintains peak performance even during sustained high-load driving. This efficiency-focused approach helps the S variant maintain its impressive range despite the substantial power output.
Dynamics and Handling
Tipping the scales at 2,560 kilograms, the Cayenne S Coupé is a formidable presence. To manage this mass, the vehicle employs advanced adaptive air suspension with electronic damper control as standard. For those seeking maximum agility, the optional Porsche Active Ride system—which utilizes a motor-pump unit at each axle to actively manage body roll and pitch—transforms the driving experience. In Comfort mode, the system even slightly banks the vehicle into curves, effectively reducing the lateral forces experienced by passengers.
When pushed into Sport or Sport Plus modes, the car remains remarkably flat, masking its weight with impressive composure. The optional rear-axle steering is a mechanical highlight, reducing the turning circle from 12.7 to 11.6 meters, which is a significant functional benefit for a vehicle of this footprint. While the massive 22-inch wheels can occasionally transmit sharp road irregularities, the overall synthesis of precise steering and torque-vectoring creates an experience that feels considerably lighter than the technical specifications suggest.
High-Voltage Charging Performance
The Cayenne S is powered by an 113 kWh battery pack (108 kWh usable) utilizing a new nickel-rich NMCA cathode chemistry and silicon-doped anodes. This configuration yields a seven percent increase in energy density compared to older NMC-811 variants. The vehicle's architecture is built for speed, peaking at nearly 390 kW of charging power under optimal conditions.
In practical application, the charging curve is exceptionally aggressive. Testing confirms a 10% to 80% charge time of approximately 16 minutes, putting the Cayenne at the absolute top of its segment. Porsche has also introduced a 'Quiet Charging' mode, which allows users to manually throttle cooling fans during sessions. Interestingly, this feature reduces acoustic noise significantly without negatively impacting the total charging time for a standard 10–80% session, offering a refined experience for owners charging in residential or urban environments.
