NASA’s Psyche spacecraft has successfully completed a critical Mars flyby, utilizing the Red Planet’s gravity to slingshot itself toward its final destination: a unique, metal-rich asteroid located in the outer main belt. This maneuver provided the necessary momentum to keep the mission on track for its scheduled 2029 arrival.
Scientific Calibration and Observations
During the flyby, mission controllers took the opportunity to test the spacecraft’s suite of scientific instruments. The onboard cameras captured a stunning timelapse video of the Martian surface, while the magnetometer and particle-detecting sensors measured the planet’s complex magnetic environment. Notably, the spacecraft’s gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer successfully detected neutrons emanating from Mars, providing valuable calibration data for future asteroid analysis.
Spotting the Martian Moons
In addition to planetary observations, Psyche’s imaging system managed to spot Mars’ two small moons, Phobos and Deimos. These tests confirm that the spacecraft’s hardware is functioning optimally as it begins the long trek across the solar system. The mission aims to study the asteroid 16 Psyche, which scientists believe may be the exposed core of an early planetesimal.
