Lawmakers in Massachusetts are evaluating a comprehensive statewide framework designed to modernize micromobility regulations. The proposed bill aims to establish clear rules for a wide range of electric vehicles, moving beyond standard e-bikes and e-scooters to include higher-speed electric motorbikes.
Expanding the Definition of Micromobility
Under the new legislation, the state would create a legal pathway for electric two-wheelers capable of reaching speeds of 30 mph, 40 mph, and potentially higher. Currently, many of these vehicles occupy a legal gray area, often falling between the definitions of bicycles and traditional combustion-engine motorcycles.
The bill seeks to provide a unified regulatory structure that balances innovation in personal electric transport with road safety. If passed, Massachusetts would join a growing list of states attempting to catch up with the rapid evolution of the electric vehicle market and the increasing popularity of high-performance electric mopeds and motorbikes.
