LG has officially discontinued a controversial McAfee pop-up advertisement that had been appearing on its Windows-based laptops. The decision comes shortly after the head of Windows at Microsoft reportedly intervened to address the intrusive nature of the software promotion.
The Ad Removal
The specific advertisement, which prompted users to purchase or renew McAfee antivirus subscriptions, had drawn significant criticism from users for being disruptive and mimicking system-level notifications. Following discussions with Microsoft executives, LG confirmed it would cease the pop-up mechanism to improve the user experience.
Lingering Concerns
While the visible advertisement has been removed, technical analysts note that the underlying mechanism for silent app installations remains in place. The framework that allowed the McAfee software to be pre-installed and updated without explicit user interaction has not been disabled, leaving questions about future bloatware on the platform.
