The 2026 Shaw Prize in Astronomy has been awarded to Ken’ichi Nomoto of the University of Tokyo and Stanford Woosley of the University of California, Santa Cruz. The prestigious honor recognizes their pioneering contributions to our understanding of supernovae and the process of nucleosynthesis.
Mapping the Life of Stars
Nomoto and Woosley are celebrated for their decades of work modeling the complex mechanisms that lead to stellar deaths. Their research has been fundamental in explaining how massive stars evolve and eventually explode, scattering heavy elements across the universe.
By bridging the gap between theoretical physics and astronomical observation, the pair established the foundational models for Type Ia and core-collapse supernovae. Their work on nucleosynthesis—the creation of new atomic nuclei—helped explain the origins of many elements found on the periodic table today.
The Shaw Prize, often referred to as the 'Nobel of the East,' carries a significant monetary award and highlights the global impact of their collaborative and independent efforts in the field of astrophysics.
