The Gist

The African Development Bank has approved a €100 million loan to support Gotion High-Tech's ambitious battery cell manufacturing project in Morocco.

Gotion High-Tech, the Chinese battery manufacturer backed by Volkswagen, has reached a significant financial milestone for its expansion into Africa. The African Development Bank (AfDB) has officially approved a €100 million loan to support the construction of a new battery cell gigafactory in Morocco.

Strategic Expansion in North Africa

The funding is designated for the first phase of Gotion's massive manufacturing complex. This facility represents a strategic move to establish a robust electric vehicle (EV) battery supply chain in North Africa, leveraging Morocco's geographic proximity to European automotive markets and its growing renewable energy infrastructure.

As a key partner to the Volkswagen Group, Gotion’s move into Morocco is expected to bolster the global availability of lithium-ion batteries. The project aims to create thousands of local jobs and position Morocco as a central hub for green technology and EV component manufacturing on the continent.
