Our physical makeup tells a story of historical adaptation rather than optimized engineering.

The Cost of Upright Walking

Many of our most common ailments stem from the transition to bipedalism. The human spine, originally adapted for four-legged movement, now bears the vertical weight of the entire upper body, making us uniquely prone to back pain and disc injuries. Similarly, the human pelvis has narrowed to facilitate walking on two legs, which historically made childbirth significantly more dangerous for humans compared to other primates.

Vestigial Remnants and Optical Quarks

Evolutionary history is also visible in structures that no longer serve their original purpose. Features such as ear muscles and the appendix remain part of our anatomy simply because they were never detrimental enough to survival for natural selection to eliminate them. Even our eyes contain a notable flaw: the nerves and blood vessels sit in front of the retina rather than behind it, creating a blind spot and increasing the risk of retinal detachment.

Ultimately, these anatomical quirks demonstrate that evolution prioritizes survival and reproduction over comfort or longevity. We are built from a series of compromises that worked 'well enough' for our ancestors to pass on their genes, leaving us with a body shaped by history rather than perfection.
