In a fascinating intersection of marine biology and applied physics, researchers have identified a new method for tracking the movement of whales, even when the animals are not vocalizing. The technique utilizes the vast network of underwater fiber-optic cables already spanning our oceans.
Distributed Acoustic Sensing
By employing a technology known as Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), scientists can turn standard telecommunications cables into a massive array of hydrophones. This allows for the detection of subtle pressure changes and vibrations in the water caused by the physical displacement of large marine mammals as they swim.
Traditionally, whale tracking has relied heavily on passive acoustic monitoring, which only works when whales are 'singing' or clicking. This new approach provides a more consistent way to monitor migration patterns and behavior without relying on the animals' vocal activity, offering a clearer picture of ocean health and biodiversity.
