While cultural stereotypes often blame personality traits, new research suggests a biological culprit: early-life respiratory infections.
The Viral Transmission Path
Researchers have identified a significant correlation between the health of infants and the presence of older siblings in the household. Older children, often attending school or daycare, act as vectors for common respiratory illnesses. When these viruses are transmitted to younger siblings during critical developmental windows, the resulting health challenges can have long-term socio-economic consequences.
According to the study, these early-stage infections may explain up to half of the observed earnings gap between siblings. The findings suggest that the physiological stress of fighting off significant infections in infancy can impact cognitive development and future academic performance, ultimately manifesting as a disparity in professional success.
