BC Hydro has unveiled an ambitious infrastructure roadmap, committing C$700 million over the next decade to significantly expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging footprint. The utility aims to reach 3,500 public charging ports by 2035, a move that would more than triple the capacity of its existing network.

Setting New Standards for Speed

As part of this modernization effort, BC Hydro is shifting its technical standards to meet the needs of long-distance travelers and modern EV batteries. The utility has designated 200 kW chargers as the new baseline for its network, ensuring faster turnaround times at stations. Furthermore, selected high-traffic locations will be equipped with 400 kW ultra-fast charging units to accommodate the latest high-performance electric vehicles.

Larger Hubs and Improved Accessibility

The investment will not only increase the number of ports but also change the configuration of charging sites. BC Hydro plans to transition toward larger charging hubs capable of serving more vehicles simultaneously. This strategic expansion is designed to alleviate range anxiety and support the provincial government's goals for zero-emission vehicle adoption across British Columbia.
