A recent study has made a significant discovery about the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a critical component of the global ocean circulation system. The research suggests that the AMOC can remain strong even when the Agulhas Leakage, a major ocean lifeline, weakens, challenging the traditional assumption that Agulhas Leakage directly controls the AMOC by delivering salt to the Atlantic.

The study found that during a cold period about 3.4 million years ago, the flow of warm, salty water from the Indian Ocean into the Atlantic nearly shut down, but the AMOC did not weaken as expected. This challenges the decades-old scientific assumption that Agulhas Leakage is the primary driver of the AMOC. Instead, the research indicates that the AMOC can shift with the climate, highlighting the complex and dynamic nature of the global ocean circulation system.
