Recent genomic studies at the 4,000-year-old Shimao settlement in China are providing unprecedented insights into the social organization of one of East Asia’s earliest complex civilizations. The findings clarify the origins of the people who inhabited this massive stone-walled city, which predates many of the region's known dynasties.
A Melting Pot of Prehistoric Ancestry
Researchers analyzing ancient DNA found that the Shimao population was primarily descended from farming communities located along the local Yellow River. However, the genetic data also identified significant markers linked to distant populations from the southern regions and the northern steppes. This suggests that Shimao was a hub of prehistoric contact, facilitating movement and interaction between diverse groups across East Asia.
The study highlights how these genetic ties contributed to the formation of a sophisticated society, challenging previous assumptions about the isolation of early inland settlements.
