Trees located in areas previously treated with prescribed burns were nearly four times more likely to survive high-intensity wildfires compared to those in untreated groves.

Quantifying the Impact

The study estimates that existing controlled burns prevented the deaths of roughly 1,900 trees. Furthermore, the analysis suggests that thousands more sequoias could have been saved if prescribed fire programs had been implemented across every grove. This evidence underscores the urgent need for proactive forest management to preserve these iconic trees against the escalating threat of climate-driven wildfires.
