Scientists have identified tiny 'footprints of death' released by dying cells, which contain particles that signal the immune system to clear cellular debris. These microscopic packages help the body clean up remains after cell death.
However, influenza viruses can exploit these structures by hiding inside them. This may let the viruses spread more easily to nearby cells, potentially increasing infection.
