Biomedical engineers at Duke University have developed retinal endothelial cells from induced pluripotent stem cells for the first time. These cells, essential for maintaining retinal blood vessel health, were injected into damaged retinal tissue in mouse models. The lab-grown cells integrated successfully, regenerating retinal blood vessels and restoring function.
In addition, the cells formed functional retinal vascular tissue in lab-grown environments, which could serve as advanced disease models. This breakthrough offers promising new avenues for treating retinal diseases and advancing fundamental research.
