The Evolution of the GT Badge
Kia is significantly raising the stakes in the compact electric vehicle market by opening orders for the performance-oriented GT versions of its EV3, EV4, and EV5 models. These vehicles mark a milestone for the manufacturer, representing the first time the GT performance designation has been applied to models built on the 400-volt iteration of the E-GMP architecture. By blending the practical utility of these popular platforms with specialized hardware and software, Kia aims to offer a more engaging and dynamic driving experience without sacrificing day-to-day usability.
All three models share a robust 81.4 kWh battery pack and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. To ensure the performance lives up to the GT badge, Kia has integrated an array of upgrades including electronically controlled suspension, dynamic torque vectoring, and launch control. A standout feature is the inclusion of the Virtual Gear Shift system, which provides haptic and auditory feedback to mimic gear changes, giving drivers a more visceral connection to the powertrain.
1. Kia EV3 GT
As the most accessible entry point into the new GT family, the EV3 GT is priced starting at £48,695. Despite its compact footprint, the dual-motor setup delivers 215 kW and 468 Nm of torque, allowing it to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in a brisk 5.7 seconds. Its efficiency remains a highlight, boasting a maximum WLTP range of 334 miles, which is impressive for a vehicle with this level of performance output.
The aesthetic of the EV3 GT is defined by its purposeful stance, featuring 20-inch alloy wheels and bespoke GT interior trim. It is positioned as the ideal choice for those who want a compact urban cruiser that doesn't shy away from spirited driving on open roads.
2. Kia EV4 GT
The EV4 GT builds on the success of what has become one of Kia’s best-selling electric nameplates in the UK. With a starting price of £49,345, it shares the 215 kW power output of the EV3 but benefits from aerodynamic and chassis optimizations that allow it to hit 62 mph in just 5.6 seconds. This model offers a slightly lower WLTP range of 313 miles, trading a small amount of distance for increased agility.
The cabin of the EV4 GT focuses on a driver-centric layout, featuring sports-contoured seats and premium materials that elevate the standard EV4 experience. With the model recently qualifying for top-tier government electric car grants, it remains one of the most compelling value-to-performance propositions in the current segment.
3. Kia EV5 GT
At the top of this new performance hierarchy sits the EV5 GT, which commands a price of £54,295. As the largest of the three, it utilizes a more powerful 225 kW motor system that produces 480 Nm of torque. While the acceleration to 62 mph is slightly more measured at 6.2 seconds due to its larger dimensions, the vehicle remains exceptionally quick for its class. The range is rated at 295 miles on the WLTP cycle, ensuring it remains highly practical for long-distance travel.
The EV5 GT serves as the primary family-oriented performance SUV in this trio. Like its stablemates, it features an exclusive GT exterior design package, along with the standard seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty and an eight-year battery coverage, ensuring longevity to match its high-octane performance features.
