A New Benchmark for Compact Electrification
Hyundai has officially opened the order books for its highly anticipated Ioniq 3 in the United Kingdom, marking a significant milestone for the brand's compact electric lineup. The vehicle is positioned as a direct challenger in the competitive B-segment, aiming to outclass rivals with superior aerodynamics and real-world efficiency. By qualifying for the full £3,750 UK Electric Car Grant, Hyundai has managed to bring the entry-level price down to an attractive £18,495 for the 42kWh Advance model.
This pricing strategy represents a substantial win for consumers, especially those who previously held reservations. Hyundai has confirmed that existing reservation holders will now benefit from the full government grant, replacing the initial £1,500 company incentive. With vehicles slated to arrive at dealerships throughout this month, the Ioniq 3 is positioned to become one of the most accessible and practical long-range electric vehicles on the market today.
Technical Specifications and Performance
Developed primarily at Hyundai’s Rüsselsheim facility in Germany, the Ioniq 3 utilizes the proven 400-volt configuration of the global E-GMP platform. The lineup features two distinct battery configurations: a 42.2 kWh 'Standard Range' option and a 61 kWh 'Long Range' variant. Interestingly, the smaller battery is paired with a more potent 108 kW motor, whereas the larger 61 kWh pack utilizes a 99.5 kW motor, optimizing weight and range dynamics for different use cases.
In terms of charging efficiency, the Ioniq 3 maintains peak outputs of 119 kW and 110 kW for the two battery sizes respectively, allowing for a 10% to 80% charge in approximately 29 to 30 minutes. The vehicle also offers an optional 22 kW on-board charger for efficient AC public or home charging. Perhaps most impressively, the Ioniq 3’s aerodynamic design allows it to push the limits of its battery capacity, achieving a range of up to 496 kilometers on the larger pack, which comfortably exceeds the performance of its closest competitors in the compact segment.
Why It Matters
- Affordability: The entry price point effectively brings long-range electric mobility to a broader demographic of UK drivers.
- Efficiency: With a 4.15-meter footprint offering nearly 500km of range, the Ioniq 3 sets a new standard for packaging and drag coefficient in the B-segment.
- Regional Production: Hyundai plans to manufacture the vehicle within Europe at its plant in Izmit, Turkiye, streamlining supply chains for the UK market.
The Ioniq 3 is currently available via the Hyundai UK online configurator, where customers can explore various trims, including the premium N Line Evo, which tops the range at £28,195. With its blend of advanced E-GMP architecture and localized development, the Ioniq 3 is poised to be a pivotal player in the European shift toward compact EVs.
