Scaling Up Sustainable Dairy Logistics
Arla Foods, the Danish dairy powerhouse, is doubling down on its commitment to sustainable distribution by expanding its fleet of electric heavy-duty vehicles. The company has officially taken delivery of four new DAF XD Electric trucks, marking a significant milestone in its transition toward a greener logistics network. This follow-up order follows the successful trial and operation of three identical units that were introduced into the Arla fleet last year, proving that heavy-duty electrification is ready for the rigors of chilled goods transport.
The DAF XD Electric Specifications
The newly commissioned vehicles are 6x2 rigid chassis trucks designed for the demanding environment of daily distribution. Under the hood, these units are powered by DAF’s robust electric drivetrain, which outputs 350 kW of peak power. To ensure these trucks can handle substantial daily routes, they are equipped with a high-capacity 525-kWh battery pack. According to DAF, this configuration provides a significant operational range of up to 550 kilometers on a single charge, making them highly effective for the regional delivery of dairy products.
Beyond performance, the XD Electric series is lauded for its driver-centric design. Feedback from Arla’s fleet management highlights the vehicle’s superior all-round visibility, which is a critical safety feature in urban delivery settings. Additionally, drivers have reported high satisfaction levels regarding comfort, which, combined with the proven reliability of the platform during the previous year of testing, solidified the company's decision to expand the electric fleet.
Infrastructure and Operational Strategy
An electric fleet is only as effective as its charging ecosystem. Recognizing this, Arla Foods has paired its vehicle procurement with a robust infrastructure upgrade at its Hobro depot. In collaboration with PACCAR Power Solutions, the site has been outfitted with a new charging facility featuring a total output capacity of 480 kW. The installation includes six fast-charging points capable of delivering up to 400 kW each.
Why It Matters
- Operational Efficiency: Data analysis suggests that the current depot-based charging strategy is sufficient to cover nearly all of Arla’s transport requirements through overnight charging cycles.
- Fleet Diversity: While the company is prioritizing electrification, it is also maintaining operational flexibility by integrating seven new DAF XD models powered by MX-11 diesel engines, ensuring a balanced transition.
- Long-term Support: To guarantee uptime, all 11 new trucks—both electric and diesel—are covered by DAF MultiSupport repair and maintenance contracts, safeguarding the company’s logistics continuity.
By investing in both the hardware and the supporting electrical grid, Arla Foods is demonstrating a comprehensive roadmap for decarbonizing heavy distribution, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical EV capabilities and real-world supply chain reliability.
