Recent scientific findings have traced the evolutionary origins of the human eye back nearly 600 million years to a primitive, one-eyed ancestor. Researchers believe this ancient "cyclops" organism laid the foundational blueprint for the visual systems found in all modern vertebrates.
The Legacy of the Median Eye
The study reveals that while humans eventually developed two lateral eyes for complex vision, the ancestor's original median eye did not disappear entirely. Instead, it evolved into the pineal gland, a small endocrine gland located deep within the brain.
Today, the pineal gland plays a vital role in human biology by producing melatonin. This function allows the body to synchronize sleep patterns with natural daylight, effectively acting as a biological clock that traces its lineage back to the light-sensing capabilities of our earliest ancestors.
