Scientists at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore have unlocked a method to generate exotic light structures by revisiting a physics experiment first conceptualized over two centuries ago. By utilizing the Poisson spot—a classic optical effect—the team has successfully created optical skyrmions without the need for specialized or expensive materials.
Simplicity in Innovation
Traditionally, creating these stable, swirling patterns of light required highly engineered materials and complex setups. However, the NTU researchers discovered that by simply shining a laser at a tiny circular disc, they could produce these stable skyrmion structures. This breakthrough demonstrates that sophisticated light manipulation can be achieved through fundamental optical principles.
