The Apple Lisa, often remembered as one of the tech giant's most ambitious yet commercially unsuccessful ventures, is finding new life through modern hardware emulation. A new project titled LisaFPGA has emerged, utilizing programmable logic to recreate the 1983 workstation's complex architecture.
Modern Logic for Vintage Computing
By leveraging Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology, developers have managed to replicate the Lisa's internal circuitry at a hardware level. This open-source recreation aims to provide an authentic experience without the prohibitive costs and reliability issues associated with original vintage hardware, which originally retailed for nearly $10,000.
Support for Legacy Media
One of the most notable features of the LisaFPGA project is its potential compatibility with 'Twiggy' drives—Apple’s ill-fated high-capacity 5.25-inch floppy disk system. While the original drives were notorious for their high failure rates, this digital recreation allows enthusiasts to interface with the unique quirks of the Lisa Operating System and its pioneering graphical user interface in a stable environment.
