The Shift to Sustainable Law Enforcement
The Kolkata Police Department has officially embarked on a transformative journey toward sustainable urban mobility. In a move that marks one of the most significant electric motorcycle deployments for any law enforcement agency in India, the department has announced the procurement of 183 electric motorcycles. The initial fleet of 60 units has already been delivered, with the remaining 123 motorcycles slated to join the force shortly. This initiative is primarily designed to bolster the 112 Emergency Response Support System (ERSS), providing officers with agile, eco-friendly transportation for rapid response and community outreach.
The Ultraviolette Skyforce: A Custom Patrol Machine
At the heart of this deployment is the Ultraviolette X-47, specifically modified into a specialized variant known as the 'Skyforce.' Unlike the consumer-facing version of the X-47 adventure tourer, the Skyforce is purpose-built for the rigorous demands of police duty. Ultraviolette Automotive, the Bengaluru-based startup responsible for the platform, has integrated a suite of tactical modifications. These include high-visibility LED blinkers, sirens, hooters, and a comprehensive public address system. The bikes are also equipped with dedicated mounts for walkie-talkies and microphones, alongside functional side panniers, all finished with distinct police decals to ensure immediate authority recognition on city streets.
Performance and Capability
The Skyforce utilizes the core architecture of the X-47's base variant, ensuring that performance remains both reliable and potent for urban patrolling. The vehicle is powered by a robust 27 kW electric motor capable of delivering 90 Nm of torque. This powertrain allows for a respectable 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 145 km/h, ensuring officers can navigate dense city traffic with ease. When paired with its 7.1 kWh battery pack, the motorcycle offers a range of up to 211 km under the Indian Driving Cycle (IDC), providing sufficient range for extended patrol shifts across the city.
Why It Matters
- Operational Efficiency: Electric motors provide instant torque, making them ideal for the stop-and-go nature of urban patrolling and high-density traffic navigation.
- Cost-Effectiveness: By reducing reliance on internal combustion engines, the Kolkata Police force anticipates significant long-term savings on fuel and maintenance expenditures.
- Sustainability Leadership: This deployment sets a high-profile precedent for municipal departments across India, proving that high-performance electric mobility is ready for the demands of critical public service.
- Future Integration: Commissioner Ajay Nand has indicated that this is only the beginning, hinting that the department is actively evaluating the inclusion of electric four-wheelers to further modernize their fleet.
A Landmark Moment for EV Innovation
This induction represents more than just a fleet upgrade; it is a validation of Indian engineering in the high-performance electric vehicle sector. Ultraviolette CEO and co-founder Narayan Subramaniam noted that this partnership marks the first time an electric two-wheeler manufacturer has achieved this scale of adoption within the police force. By bridging the gap between cutting-edge adventure-touring technology and the day-to-day requirements of maintaining public safety, the collaboration underscores a shared commitment to both environmental responsibility and operational excellence in India’s growing EV ecosystem.
