The heat shield is designed to protect Starship as it re-enters Earth's atmosphere at extreme speeds, enduring intense thermal stress. While Musk has long advocated for a design that allows for quick turnarounds between flights, experts warn that the current shield technology may require extensive inspections or repairs after each mission, undermining the goal of near-instantaneous reuse.
