The European Union has officially opened a probe into Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, citing concerns over the 'addictive' nature of its social media platforms. Under the Digital Services Act (DSA), regulators are examining whether the platforms' design choices pose significant risks to the mental health of minors.
Focus on Design Exploitation
The investigation centers on specific features such as infinite scrolling, push notifications, and autoplaying videos. European officials argue that Meta may have failed to properly assess and mitigate the risks these features pose, potentially leading to behavioral addictions and harmful psychological effects among younger users.
Compliance with the Digital Services Act
As a designated Very Large Online Platform (VLOP), Meta is required to adhere to strict transparency and safety standards. This probe marks a significant escalation in the EU's efforts to regulate Big Tech, focusing specifically on protecting children from algorithmic manipulation and ensuring that platform interfaces are not designed to be intentionally habit-forming.
