Data centers in Ireland have reached a significant milestone in energy consumption, now accounting for 23% of the country’s total metered electricity. According to the latest figures, power usage by these facilities grew by 10% over the last year, even as strict restrictions on new grid connections remain in place around the Dublin region.
A Growing Share of the Grid
The rapid expansion of the digital economy has placed immense pressure on Ireland's energy infrastructure. For the first time, the electricity consumed by data centers has surpassed the total electricity used by all urban dwellings in the country combined. This shift highlights the massive scale of cloud infrastructure required to support global tech operations headquartered in the region.
Grid Constraints and Future Outlook
The rise in consumption comes despite a de facto moratorium on new data center connections in the Dublin area, implemented by the state-owned grid operator EirGrid. These restrictions were introduced to prevent potential blackouts and manage the surging demand. However, existing facilities that were already approved continue to come online or expand, driving the overall percentage of consumption higher.
