In a significant breakthrough for evolutionary biology, researchers have utilized public data from citizen scientists to decode the origins of parental care in harvestmen, commonly known as daddy longlegs. By leveraging observations and photographs from the iNaturalist platform, the scientific community has more than doubled the documented instances of egg-guarding behavior in these arachnids.
Diverse Evolutionary Paths
The study reveals a fascinating distinction between how different sexes approach offspring protection. Contrary to previous assumptions, the data suggests that maternal and paternal care followed entirely different evolutionary trajectories.
