China’s semiconductor industry appears to have reached a significant milestone in its quest for technological self-sufficiency. According to reports from The Information, a state-backed firm based in Shanghai has developed immersion deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machines, a specialized technology previously dominated by the Dutch giant ASML Holding NV.
Breaking the ASML Monopoly
Lithography tools are essential for the production of modern microchips, and immersion DUV technology is particularly critical for manufacturing the most widely used semiconductors globally. Until now, Chinese chipmakers have been heavily dependent on Western equipment, which has been subject to increasingly strict export controls.
