Scientists have successfully restored light sensitivity in donor human retinas up to 10 hours post-mortem, offering new hope for future vision restoration treatments.

In a landmark study for ophthalmology and regenerative medicine, researchers have demonstrated that human retinas can be resuscitated to respond to light for up to 10 hours after death. By perfusing donor tissue with oxygen and blood, the team was able to maintain the biological activity of the photoreceptor cells, which are responsible for converting light into neural signals.

A Path Toward Eye Transplants

This achievement marks a significant technical milestone. Previously, the rapid degradation of neural tissue after death made it difficult to study or utilize donor eyes for complex functional restoration. The ability to keep these delicate structures responsive for nearly half a day provides a much-needed window for scientific observation and brings the medical community a step closer to effective eye transplants designed to restore vision.

While full-eye transplantation remains a complex challenge due to the difficulty of reconnecting the optic nerve to the brain, this research validates that the sensory hardware of the eye can remain viable far longer than previously thought if provided with the correct physiological support.
