CableLabs is warning about potential compatibility issues arising from Wi-Fi 7's implementation of the WPA3 security standard, which may hinder connections with older devices. This could lead to increased customer service calls and confusion among users.
Key Insights
Wi-Fi 7 products have been on the market for a couple of years, but as their adoption grows, compatibility issues with older devices are starting to emerge. CableLabs cautions that attempts to make Wi-Fi 7 access points compatible with older devices can actually create more compatibility problems. To address this, the Wi-Fi Alliance devised the WPA3-Personal Compatibility Mode (PCM), which requires client devices to support the RSNO elements mechanism, offering a potential workaround to these compatibility challenges.
