The Gist

A new VentureBeat Pulse report reveals that while enterprises are rushing to adopt agent orchestration platforms, 71% admit their 'agents' are still just simple chatbot wrappers.

Enterprise AI adoption is facing a significant maturity gap. According to the latest VentureBeat Pulse Research survey of 101 organizations, there is a stark disconnect between the sophisticated orchestration layers being built and the actual capabilities of deployed AI agents.

Model Gravity Favors Anthropic

The research shows that enterprises are rapidly consolidating onto major model-provider platforms. Anthropic’s Claude has emerged as the clear leader, serving as the primary orchestration platform for 40% of surveyed organizations—more than double its closest rivals, Microsoft (18%) and OpenAI (13%). This trend is driven by "model gravity," where companies choose orchestration environments natively aligned with the frontier models they have standardized on.

The Orchestration Gap

Despite the heavy investment in platforms, the "Chatbot Trap" remains a dominant reality. Roughly 71% of enterprises admit that a quarter or fewer of their deployed agents are true multi-step orchestrated workflows. Instead, the majority of these deployments remain single-prompt chatbot wrappers. While success is officially measured by task completion reliability (32%) and multi-step management (28%), few organizations have achieved these goals at scale.

Fear of Vendor Lock-In

Architectural choices are being heavily influenced by a desire to maintain control. By the end of 2026, 51% of enterprises expect to utilize a hybrid control plane—combining provider-native tools with external orchestration. The primary driver for this hybrid approach is the fear of vendor lock-in, cited by 35% of respondents as their top concern regarding model-provider platforms.

Fiscal Risks and Future Spend

Operational maturity also lags in financial oversight. More than a quarter of organizations (27%) report having no real-time programmatic way to stop a "runaway agent" before receiving a budget-breaking bill. Despite this, investment remains focused on growth; 34% of budgets are directed toward agent workflow tooling, while 25% is dedicated to security and permissions enforcement. The industry is currently building the infrastructure for a future of autonomous agents that has not yet fully arrived.
