Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo has expressed optimism regarding the potential for joint European Union debt, citing a "window of opportunity" to revisit the controversial fiscal strategy. In an exclusive interview with Bloomberg Television, Cuerpo suggested that collective borrowing could serve the union's long-term economic interests.
Resistance from Northern Members
The proposal faces significant hurdles, as traditional fiscal hawks such as Germany and the Netherlands have already signaled skepticism toward the idea. These member states have historically resisted joint debt mechanisms, preferring individual national responsibility for sovereign borrowing.
Despite the initial pushback following his formal proposal earlier this week, Cuerpo remains confident that the dialogue remains open. The discussion comes at a critical time as the EU evaluates its financial strategies for future growth and regional stability.
