Revolutionizing Heavy-Duty Transit
The landscape of European freight logistics is undergoing a significant transformation with the official opening of a cutting-edge charging park in Kufstein, Austria. Located along the high-traffic Brenner transit route—a critical artery connecting Germany, Austria, and Italy—this facility serves as the premier commercial deployment for Siemens’ latest innovation in electric vehicle infrastructure: the Sicharge Flex charging system.
OMV, acting as the pilot operator for this technology, has designed the site specifically to bridge the gap between passenger electric vehicle needs and the massive power requirements of electric heavy-duty transport. The Kufstein site currently provides a robust network of four dedicated charging points for passenger cars and two high-capacity points for commercial trucks, with each capable of delivering up to 400 kW of power.
The Sicharge Flex Architecture
At the core of this deployment is the modular and decentralized Sicharge Flex system. Designed to be highly scalable, the system can be configured to manage total power outputs ranging from 480 kW to a staggering 1.68 MW. This flexibility allows for dynamic power distribution, which intelligently routes electricity to vehicles based on their specific battery needs, ensuring optimal efficiency regardless of the number of vehicles connected simultaneously.
Beyond the current capabilities, the site is slated for a significant upgrade that will introduce the Megawatt Charging System (MCS). This upcoming expansion will add four additional charging points tailored exclusively for e-trucks, offering power levels between 600 and 1,200 kW. For context, an electric truck equipped with a 620-kWh battery could potentially recover between 20 and 80 percent of its charge in approximately 45 minutes under ideal conditions. To support the operational demands of long-haul freight, the site is also integrated with Siemens’ cloud-based Sifinity Control platform, which enables real-time monitoring and maintenance.
Why It Matters
- Corridor Electrification: By targeting the Brenner route, OMV and Siemens are directly addressing the 'range anxiety' of heavy-duty transport, facilitating cleaner logistics across the Alps.
- Scalability: The decentralized nature of the Sicharge Flex platform allows operators to scale power output as demand grows, preventing the need for frequent infrastructure overhauls.
- Multi-Modal Support: The site successfully blends high-speed public charging for consumer vehicles with heavy-duty commercial charging, maximizing land utility.
- Strategic Expansion: OMV has already committed to rolling out further Sicharge Flex installations across Austria, cementing its role as a key player in the European energy transition.
The Kufstein facility is more than just a power station; it is a holistic service hub. Recognizing the reality of long-distance trucking, OMV has ensured that the location provides amenities such as catering, washrooms, and showers, turning a stop for energy into a rest opportunity for drivers. This combination of hardware prowess and driver-centric design sets a new standard for the next generation of highway charging corridors.
