The Gist

Runway is expanding beyond model development by launching a specialized router that provides developer API access to a diverse range of third-party media models.

Runway is pivoting from being solely a generative AI model developer to becoming a critical infrastructure provider for the media industry. The startup recently announced the launch of the Runway Media Router, a new tool integrated into the Runway Dev platform that simplifies how developers interact with various AI capabilities.

A Unified API for Media Generation

The Media Router acts as a gateway, providing API access to a curated selection of third-party image, video, and audio models. By offering these alongside Runway’s proprietary tools, the company aims to position itself as the central layer for generative media workflows. This move comes as the generative AI market becomes increasingly crowded with specialized models, making it difficult for developers to manage multiple integrations.

Released through the Runway Dev platform—which debuted earlier this month—the router is designed to handle the complexity of model selection. This allows creators and software engineers to focus on building applications rather than managing individual API connections for different media types.
