OpenAI is set to implement an advertising program for its ChatGPT Free and Go tiers in India, starting on August 27. This strategic decision is targeted at the country's estimated 100 million active weekly users, allowing OpenAI to tap into a lucrative market.
The advertising initiative will showcase promotions from 50 brands, facilitated through collaborations with major advertising agencies, WPP and Omnicom. Brands will also have access to an ad manager, with a minimum budget requirement of ₹725 (approximately $7.60).
Key Details of the Ad Program
- Launch Date: August 27, 2026
- Target Audience: Users of ChatGPT Free and Go tiers
- Partnerships: WPP and Omnicom
- Brand Participation: 50 brands anticipated
- Budget: Minimum of ₹725 (≈ $7.60) for brand advertising
This approach follows OpenAI's introduction of ads in the U.S. in February 2026, with Europe being included as of earlier this month, suggesting a phased expansion of its advertising strategy across global markets. Notably, OpenAI's revenue has seen remarkable growth, reaching $6.7 billion in Q2 2026, marking an increase from $5.7 billion in the previous quarter, bolstering its monetization strategy as it approaches a potential initial public offering (IPO).
OpenAI's aggressive marketing, particularly of its sub-$5 ChatGPT Go plan during prominent sports events like the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and Indian Premier League (IPL) in August 2025, has significantly attracted users and generated interest. As the company moves to monetize its platforms more effectively, this ad program appears to be a vital component of its overall revenue strategy.
