Recent research reveals that the transformation of a honeybee larva into a queen is more complex than previously thought. Young worker bees build specialized 'royal cribs' using customized wax to house the developing queen larvae.
These royal cribs benefit from carefully controlled temperature and humidity, maintained by the worker bees. In addition, dedicated teams of attendants nurture and care for the future queens throughout their development.
