A New Approach to Hearing Assistance
Legato has officially entered the wearable market with its flagship product, Legato Frames. Designed for adults experiencing up to moderate hearing loss, these smart glasses integrate advanced hearing-assistance technology directly into the arms of the frame. By embedding specialized hardware into everyday eyewear, Legato aims to eliminate the social stigma and physical discomfort often associated with traditional medical hearing devices.
Unlike conventional hearing aids that rely on directional microphones to isolate sound, Legato utilizes an onboard AI system. This software intelligently differentiates human speech from ambient background noise in real time, amplifying the former while suppressing the latter. The result is a more natural listening experience, particularly in crowded or loud environments where traditional aids often struggle to maintain clarity.
Design, Privacy, and Performance
The engineering behind Legato Frames emphasizes both discretion and functionality. Despite the complex array of sensors and processors, the total package weighs only 34 grams, including lenses. The company has opted for an open-ear design, which allows the wearer to remain aware of their environment, yet they have addressed the common concern of sound leakage. A specialized dual-speaker system directs audio toward the ear canal while utilizing active cancellation to prevent sound from escaping; Legato claims this reduces external noise leakage by 99 percent just inches away from the device.
Privacy was a central pillar in the development phase. All AI processing is performed locally on the device hardware, ensuring no audio or data is sent to the cloud. Notably, the glasses do not feature cameras or recording capabilities, alleviating common privacy concerns associated with smart eyewear. Furthermore, the devices offer 10 to 12 hours of battery life on a single charge and support Bluetooth streaming for music and phone calls, blending medical utility with consumer electronics convenience.
