The Gist

“French charging giant Electra has launched its most advanced urban high-powered charging site in Madrid, featuring 600 kW capacity and specialized commercial vehicle support.”

A New Benchmark for Urban Charging

French mobility infrastructure provider Electra has officially opened the doors to its latest high-powered charging (HPC) hub in Madrid, marking a significant milestone for urban electrification in Europe. Known as the Carabanchel Electralinera, this facility stands out as the company’s most powerful urban site to date. Strategically located between the A-42 and M-40 motorways, the hub serves as a critical artery for both everyday commuters and logistics operators looking for reliable, rapid energy top-ups within the city limits.

The scale of the project is substantial, boasting a total of 26 dedicated charging points. The layout is thoughtfully engineered to handle diverse traffic, offering 22 spots specifically optimized for passenger vehicles and four additional bays designed for larger N1 and N2 commercial vehicles, such as electric vans and trucks up to 12 tonnes. By placing such high-capacity infrastructure in a dense urban environment, Electra is directly addressing the 'range anxiety' often associated with inner-city logistics and daily transit.

Cutting-Edge Technical Architecture

At the heart of the Carabanchel Electralinera lies the Alpitronic Hypercharger HYC1000, a modular and decentralized charging system that represents the current gold standard in power delivery. This system separates the power electronics into central 'Power Cabinets,' while individual 'Dispensers' handle the physical charging connection. This allows for dynamic load balancing, ensuring that power is distributed efficiently across all 26 points based on real-time vehicle demand.

To support its massive 600 kW peak output, the site integrates advanced grid-management technologies. A 100 kWp photovoltaic canopy covers the station, providing a sustainable source of local renewable energy. Furthermore, the inclusion of an on-site battery storage system acts as a buffer, smoothing out demand peaks and preventing the hub from placing an undue burden on the local electrical grid. This holistic approach ensures that high-speed charging remains reliable, even during periods of heavy usage.

Strategic Integration and Expansion

Beyond the hardware, the project highlights the importance of user experience and urban integration. Recognizing that charging times, while decreasing, still represent a 'pause' in a user's day, the site is situated amidst a hub of shops, restaurants, and fitness centers. To optimize the workflow for busy drivers, Electra has integrated a reservation feature into its mobile app, allowing users to secure a charging slot up to one hour in advance, effectively eliminating the frustration of waiting in queues.

The project, which represents a three million euro investment, was realized through a public-private partnership with the City of Madrid. Electra has secured a 15-year operating concession for the 5,500-square-meter plot, signaling a long-term commitment to the Spanish capital. This site is far from an isolated effort; it joins a rapidly growing network of 18 Electralineras across Spain. With eight locations already active in the Madrid region, Electra has set an aggressive roadmap, aiming to establish 50 fast-charging sites throughout the country by 2027.
