Scaling Sustainable Logistics
The heavy-duty logistics sector is undergoing a massive transformation, and DHL Freight is at the forefront of this shift. Having moved beyond the prototype and testing phases, the logistics giant has officially deployed the first SuperPanther eTopas 600 heavy-duty truck produced in Europe into its active commercial fleet. Operating primarily out of the Netherlands with consistent cross-border routes into Belgium, the vehicle is proving that long-haul, heavy-duty logistics can be handled by battery-electric propulsion.
Since September, the eTopas 600 has been averaging 2,000 kilometers per week, providing DHL with real-world data on how battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) perform in a non-shuttle, flexible transport environment. This deployment follows a successful two-week pilot in Austria, where the truck maintained an efficient consumption rate of 102 kWh per 100 km, effectively demonstrating the feasibility of electrified heavy freight in standard supply chain operations.
Technical Specifications and Performance
The SuperPanther eTopas 600 is designed for high-intensity duty cycles, utilizing a massive 621 kWh LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery pack supplied by CATL. This battery architecture allows for a technical range of up to 560 km, with DHL reporting a practical daily range of approximately 500 km per charge. The truck is powered by a robust electric drivetrain capable of a continuous power output of 394 kW, with peak performance reaching 692 kW for demanding hauls.
- Battery Capacity: 621 kWh (LFP)
- Peak Power Output: 692 kW
- Charging Capability: Dual CCS2 connectors (up to 660 kW combined)
- Charging Speed: 20% to 80% in 38 minutes
- Operational Range: Up to 560 km (technical)
One of the standout features for logistics operators is the rapid charging capability. By utilizing dual CCS2 connectors, the eTopas 600 can replenish its massive battery from 20% to 80% in just 38 minutes. This rapid turnaround is essential for maintaining strict delivery schedules in international logistics, minimizing downtime at charging depots during cross-border transit.
Why it Matters
The successful integration of the eTopas 600 is more than just a win for DHL; it is a critical milestone for SuperPanther’s European strategy. By manufacturing the vehicles via SKD assembly at Steyr Automotive in Austria, SuperPanther is rapidly localizing its supply chain to meet growing demand. With a target of 1,000 vehicles on European roads by the end of 2027, the success of this DHL pilot serves as a blueprint for other logistics providers.
For DHL, the move is part of a broader strategy to expand its fleet of 1,700 low-emission vehicles. Beyond simple hardware procurement, the collaboration includes forward-looking initiatives such as autonomous driving research, indicating that the future of freight will rely on a combination of electrification and advanced software-led operational efficiency.
