According to recent reports from active workers and platform observers, the service has stopped accepting new customers, and existing users have noted that AWS is actively closing accounts.
The Decline of Crowdsourcing
Launched in 2005, Mechanical Turk was a foundational tool for the tech industry, providing a marketplace for 'Human Intelligence Tasks' (HITs) that computers were unable to perform. It played a critical role in early machine learning development by providing human-labeled data sets.
The Impact of AI
The move comes at a time when generative AI has significantly reduced the demand for low-cost human labor in data labeling and simple digital tasks.
