SoftBank Group Corp. has significantly expanded the backing for its $40 billion bridge loan intended to fund its investment in OpenAI. According to sources familiar with the transaction, the syndication phase has successfully attracted 21 new lenders, broadening the financial base for the massive capital injection into the U.S.-based artificial intelligence leader.
Expanding the Financial Syndicate
The bridge loan is a critical component of SoftBank's strategy to secure a substantial stake in OpenAI. By bringing in a diverse group of over twenty new financial institutions, the Japanese conglomerate is distributing the risk and solidifying the liquidity required for one of the largest tech-related financing deals in recent history.
This move highlights the intense interest from the global banking sector in participating in the growth of generative AI. While the specific terms and the names of the new lenders remain confidential, the successful syndication indicates strong market confidence in SoftBank’s strategic pivot toward high-growth AI assets.
