The global semiconductor market faced a sharp correction on Monday as the selloff in South Korean tech stocks extended to US markets. SK Hynix Inc. American depositary shares (ADRs) tumbled by as much as 9.3%, signaling growing investor anxiety regarding the valuation of AI-related hardware companies.
Global Ripple Effects
This downward trend follows a record-breaking 15% plunge for SK Hynix in South Korea, an event that triggered a market-wide trading suspension and sent the Kospi index down by 9%. The ADRs are now trading just slightly above their initial pricing level of $149 from last week's debut.
Broad Semiconductor Slump
The impact was felt across the entire memory and storage sector. Major industry players including Micron Technology Inc., Sandisk Corp., and Western Digital Corp. all saw their share prices decline by more than 6%. Market analysts, including Mandeep Singh from Bloomberg Intelligence, suggest that these movements underscore fears that the current investment cycle in AI infrastructure may be overextended.
