A recent scientific breakthrough has shifted the focus of Alzheimer’s research from brain plaques to the immune system's role in sleep disruption. Researchers have identified that microglia—the brain's resident immune cells—become overactive in the presence of amyloid plaques, leading to chronic inflammation that prevents restorative sleep.
The Role of Microglia
In studies involving mice with amyloid plaques, scientists observed that these overactive microglia triggered inflammatory responses that severely curtailed deep sleep. By temporarily removing the majority of these immune cells, researchers were able to restore more than two hours of sleep per day in the subjects.
A Paradigm Shift in Treatment
Significantly, the restoration of sleep occurred even though the amyloid plaques remained unchanged. This suggests that the neurological symptoms of Alzheimer's, specifically sleep loss, may be treated by targeting inflammation and immune response rather than focusing solely on the removal of plaques. This discovery opens new pathways for therapeutic interventions aimed at improving the quality of life for those suffering from neurodegenerative diseases.
