IBM is pushing back against concerns that artificial intelligence is making its legacy mainframe business obsolete, following a difficult quarter that saw the company's stock price tumble. The decline was triggered by warnings of lower-than-expected mainframe sales, leading some analysts to question the long-term viability of the hardware division in an AI-centric market.
Budget Shifts to AI
IBM CEO Arvind Krishna addressed the situation by explaining that the current slump is a matter of budget allocation rather than a permanent shift in technology preference. According to the CEO, many corporate clients have temporarily diverted their hardware budgets toward building out AI infrastructure, which has impacted the sales cycle for traditional mainframe systems.
The company maintains that this is a temporary phenomenon. IBM views AI and mainframes as complementary technologies, suggesting that as AI implementations mature, the need for robust, secure mainframe processing will remain a critical component of the enterprise ecosystem.
